Church Building
Update

We have an opportunity to partner with HB Church to utilize their church property and to come together for the strengthening and vitality of both of our communities.

This opportunity has arisen at a critical moment for us as a church, as our lease at the warehouse ends in May and as we have been seeking God’s direction for a more permanent facility that can accommodate all of our ministries in one place.

frequently asked questions

Are we becoming a Baptist church?

We are not becoming a Baptist church, and we are not joining the Baptist denomination as a member church. We have agreed to honor the 70-year legacy of HB Church as a Baptist Church by giving a voluntary contribution to the Baptist Mission Fund for projects such as church-planting and disaster relief. This is a statement of partnership, even as they intend to partner with us in sharing the facility that generations before us built here in HB.

Even as we will not be joining the Baptist denomination, we are to steer away from an attitude of exclusion or superiority. There are good reasons we will remain non-denominational, but we have historically partnered with and supported churches of several different backgrounds and denominations because we believe we are ultimately one in Christ.

What are we going to be called?

We will continue to be called Branches HB. Or you could call us “Branches HB Church” as that’s both community’s names put together! The point is we are not changing the name of our fellowship (nor its leadership structure or legal structure).

Are you splitting teaching with the other pastor(s)?

Branches has always had a teaching team with Andrew functioning as the primary, anchoring teacher most Sundays. As we come together, we will maintain a teaching team culture made up of diverse voices and the Pastor of HB Church, Jason Robinson, will simply join the regular teaching rotation of Branches. Andrew will continue to be the most frequent teacher in the Branches community and will continue to be responsible for the teaching culture at Branches.

Will staffing change? Are we letting anyone go? What will Jason’s role be?

There will be no staffing changes except that we will be adding Jason from HB Church to our staff team. Jason has pastored faithfully for over 30 years in the church and has an additional role in church-planting and church revitalization with the Southern Baptists, so he will step into a role with us overseeing Leadership Development. We believe that he will not only contribute a lot to all our existing ministries but that he will be instrumental in helping us raise up more pastors/teachers, and future church planters.

Will we lose our small family feeling by moving to a new church facility?

No, because our “family feeling” has less to do with where we meet but rather how we relate to each other. Our chief concern in every season of our fellowship is whether we are all individually choosing to be community, regardless of our size. We could be a fellowship of 100, but if people aren’t doing life together, it’s just as corporate and disconnected as if we were a fellowship of 1000 regardless of what the gatherings might feel like. But if we are choosing to invest in the lives of others through Community Groups, Men’s and Women’s Groups, or by serving in a particular area of ministry—the church will always feel like family because we’ll actually be practicing what it means to be the family of God.

At each stage of our growth over the years we’ve been able to maintain the feeling of being a family because the majority of our congregation is actively engaged in the lives of others in the community.

the building + logistics

Why are we moving when the other facility is smaller and not as nice as the Senior Center?

From a square footage perspective, HB Church may not have the same footprint as the Senior Center, but it does contain a lot of usable space. In fact, it has enough room so that we can reduce our footprint from the Senior Center and the additional warehouse we were leasing into one central facility. That allows us, for instance, to host our youth (75-100 young people) on the same property as our weekend services for the first time in the past 5 years!

Additionally, we have a stated goal in Huntington Beach to keep churches as churches. The city facilities that are available to the public will always be available for church use, but if we allow church properties to be sold in Huntington Beach to the highest bidder, we may never regain them. HB Church needed a thriving community to sustain the property, and we are that community. There may be more properties that we help preserve and renew in the future!

Furthermore, one more benefit is this will drastically reduce our facility overhead immediately by 50% in terms of rent, and by about 75% compared to what we projected we would spend in the future! To a certain extent some of that savings will go into maintenance and redevelopment of the property, but it isn’t going to be value lost in rent anymore.

But yes, the facility is—let’s use the word—“vintage.” And it is not surrounded by green space like the Senior Center. Even so, we trust that our talented community is going to be able to make the facility an inviting and engaging space for our gatherings into the future and one that, for the first time in our history, we can build to suit our needs 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Please remember, we do not want to make any facility an idol—neither the one we are headed to nor the one we are leaving. The Senior Center will always be a place we drive by and remember with fondness, but what we treasure most is the community of people who have filled that space and who will fill the next one.

Will parking be a huge issue and prevent people from coming to church?

Parking is a serious consideration for us as we plan to move to HB Church. Fortunately, in addition to the stalls on HB Church’s property, there is an additional parking lot available on Sunday mornings across the street. Between the two locations, we will have more spaces available than at the Senior Center currently. It will present some logistical challenges as we have to create a parking team and a short shuttle service, but we are thinking through ways this can be as painless as possible. Who knows—a Branches trolley might even be fun!

The truth is, if you really want to go somewhere, you’ll be willing to do what it takes to get there (just think of the 30-40 minutes it takes to get from Disneyland’s parking lot to the actual park). If, on occasion, some families have to utilize drop-off and then take the additional 5-minute shuttle to service, we don’t believe that will seriously impede their church experience. The added time and logistical challenge we’re going to be facing is one shared by many, many growing churches here in the land-locked and fully developed city of HB, and one we’re already facing to an extent at the Senior Center during our 10:30am service. As a provision for new folks or who are visiting for the first time, we do intend to have some spaces reserved for them on the HB Campus to make sure they feel welcome before they get the hang of the parking situation.

All that to say, we don’t believe it will be an issue even from day one, but we will adapt and respond if any challenges do arise.

Is there a large outdoor space? Will we still have potluck?

Yes, we will still have potluck. There is some space that faces the street that we intend to enclose and a breezeway/patio area that wraps around the center of the facility—all of that we intend to use for our potluck. We will also likely cordon off some parking lot space as well. There’s no way we’re not eating together!

Will I still be able to sit outside to watch the service?

We understand that since we started allowing for outdoor seating at the Senior Center, it has become a popular option for many people. Though the space seems less conducive for outdoor seating arrangements, it is still something we will experiment with to see if we can accommodate it.

If we merge with HB Church, will we then co-own the church facility?

The plan is that the two fellowships will become one as Branches and we will own the facility as one church.

Will beach services continue?

Yes! Our outdoor services are the few times a year that the entire congregation can come together for one single service. That alone is an important reason to continue the tradition! But we also want to remember the church is not a building, it is the people of God. Leaving the walls of a traditional church building for a Sunday helps remind us of who we actually are as a fellowship.

Will there still be a recovery ministry at the new church?

Yes. Among the thriving ministries of HB Church is a midweek recovery Bible Study and a recovery outreach service on Saturday nights, called The Garage. We will continue to support and host these important ministries.

timeline

When are we moving locations? How long until we’re in the new space?

Youth will move over to the new facility starting in the second week in June 2025. We’ll also start to office out of that facility in June and host our larger midweek gatherings.

Weekend services will not commence on the HB Church property until the facility is fully prepared for our use. That will take place when the Kids classrooms are prepared, parking plans are developed, and the facility gets a general tune-up. So for at least a few months following the second week of June, parents may have a longer drive for pickup and dropoff between HB Church and the Senior Center for Youth (unless, of course, it’s on the way for you).

We’ll update our timeline as work is underway in the facility.

What renovations do we have to do?

While the main gathering space for our weekend services is relatively new, many of the other spaces on the property will require some work to prepare them for our use. For our first round of renovations, we intend to furnish, paint, and put in new floors while also getting to maintenance items that have been deferred for many years. We also intend to bring some new life to the outdoor spaces and enclose the property with a wall for safety and sound insulation.

Will we continue to meet at the Senior Center?

We do not have a date for our full move-in set for HB Church, so for the foreseeable future, we will continue to meet at the Senior Center. Long-term, we have known for some time that we have practically outgrown the accommodations of the Senior Center facility. We intend to move over in full to the HB Church facility in the months following our partial move-in taking place in June 2025.
